Twas the night before Christmas, back in a time for which we have totally taken for granted. A time when we walked together and were not worried of what may happen at our local department store? These small little department stores back then, where actually part of the community, unlike the big chain stores of today, where your just a number and they could care less of you, as they just want your hard earned money in their pockets, not yours. The department store like this of Woolworth’s, would actually take the time to get to know you and recognize you as their customer, they had counter space there, where you could grab a burger either for lunch, or maybe a day spent shopping, as you became Hungary for a quick bite. The day of the local department store may be a thing of the past, as the bigger store not just pushes them out, but pushes us to the side, as they proceed in taking our hard money, to line the lining of their pockets.
Back in that magical era of yesteryear, these small community department stores were the place to go and if you couldn’t add change in your head, Oh Well!!!!! Then the pennies didn’t add up at the end of the day. Now this didn’t really bother the Owner of the store too much, as he always kept the customer happy, for it is this type of Business smarts, that developed the ” Loyal consumer”, where now with the big store chains, the Loyalty has flown the coup within this Society. Just imagine walking into the store and totally forgetting what you went in there for? This would happen all the time back then, as you and the Owner became friends and would chat each time you went into the store.
As a Youngster we all remember going to these small community department stores with our Mom’s, getting fitted with back to school clothes, or the Sunday best clothes, now as we are all grown, both you and Mom, how times change where now we are the ones bringing Mom shopping, except for the fact that, the small community stores, are now replaced by the big chain non personal store. Times change, people change, things change, everything around us changes and if we don’t learn to accept or adapt, then we will be left in the dust of the change, forever trying to catch up against all odds.
Twas the night before Christmas and even back in a time, of the small community department store, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse, as all were waiting for the arrival, of that big jolly of a man, in a red suit, that brought us great Christmas joy and a smile to all of our faces. We were all frozen under the blankets, afraid to move, for we did not want to make it onto the naughty list? In a way I do miss these stores, as for a short time, we were actually treated as someone and not treated as just a number, plus with no customer loyalty, the days of brand loyalty are gone as well, as now it has become basically the flavor of the month club.
” Twas the night before Christmas and the stillness is deafening, as we all get ready for a jolly soul”
” Woolworth’s not much in the name, within the community though, it’s worth was like a pot of gold, with personality and integrity”
” Pennies from heaven, a youngster at heart, the community stores will never leave us, with nostalgia at every turn”
” Loyalty was the key to their success, with the bigger chain, there is no more loyalty, leaving us all out to dry”
